چکیده

The Maxwell time is a typical time scale for the screening of an electric field in a medium with a given conductivity. We introduce a generalization of the Maxwell time that is valid for gas discharges: the ionization screening time, that takes the growth of the conductivity due to impact ionization into account. We present an analytic estimate for this time scale, assuming a planar geometry, and evaluate its accuracy by comparing with oneand three-dimensional numerical simulations. We investigate the minimum plasma density required to prevent the growth of streamers with local field enhancement, and we discuss the effects of photoionization and electron detachment on ionization screening. Our results can help to understand the development of pulsed discharges, for example nanosecond pulsed discharges at atmospheric pressure or halo discharges in the lower ionosphere.

Scaled-up Nonequilibrium Air Plasmas

The volume scalability of nonequilibrium plasmas produced by electrical discharges in atmospheric pressure air has been investigated. A variety of direct current (DC) and pulsed glow discharges obtained in either slow flow of ambient or fast flow of preheated (~2000 K) air at atmospheric pressure is presented. Single DC and repetitively pulsed discharges represent the first approach. Stable dis...

A new numerical strategy with space-time adaptivity and error control for multi-scale gas discharge simulations

This paper presents a new resolution strategy for multi-scale gas discharge simulations based on a second order time adaptive integration and space adaptive multiresolution. A classical fluid model is used to model plasma discharges, considering drift-diffusion equations and electric field computation. The proposed numerical method provides a time-space accuracy control of the solution, and thu...

Gas heating in fast pulsed discharges in N–O mixtures

The dynamics of gas heating in fast pulsed discharges in nitrogen-oxygen mixtures was analyzed using a state-specific plasmachemical model and an energy conservation equation. It was shown that the heating rate changes over time according to the changes of the species involved in the heating processes. An increasing dependence on time was shown. The results show that higher electron density, el...

Red sprite discharges in the atmosphere at high altitude: the molecular physics and the similarity with laboratory discharges

An overview of the general phenomenology and physical mechanism of large-scale electrical discharges termed ‘sprites’ observed at high altitude in the Earth’s atmosphere above thunderstorms is presented. The primary emphasis is placed on summarizing available experimental data on various emissions documented to date from sprites and interpretation of these emissions in the context of similar da...

Effect of power modulation on properties of pulsed capacitively coupled radiofrequency discharges

We describe measurements of plasma properties of pulsed, low pressure, capacitively coupled discharges operated in argon. The research aims to determine the effect of modulating the radiofrequency power during the discharge part of the pulse cycle. Measurements of local electron density and optical emission were made in capacitively-coupled rf discharges generated in a Gaseous Electronics Confe...
